Kolkata

Kolkata, formerly spelled Calcutta in English Located in northeast India & capital of West Bengal. West Bengal is bounded in north by Sikkim and Bhutan, east by Bihar and northwest by Nepal. The city is still one of India's commercial and cultural centers. It is a city with a great deal of charm - a city of strange paradoxes and one that leaves an indelible impression on the visitor. Total population of Kolkata is around 12 million, and the main language is Bengali. Kolkata, lies on the river Hoogly, distributaries of the Ganges. Its close proximity to the river and sea developed it as a major commercial center.


A town of traditional & historical interest, traditional elegance and social importance, the record of Kolkata can be tracked back to only 300 years when the visionary from the east India Company, Job Charnock arrived here. Kolkata is popular for its wonderful natural cotton sarees known as the Tant and natural leather bags. Kolkata is also popular for its candies & sweets. The lovely stores are always packed and similarly packed are the fish marketplaces and the plant & flower marketplaces. Kolkata is always a vivid town. Kolkata is vivid, heated, unbreakable, powerful, in existence and helpful. It is one of the biggest metro places in the world, and the entrance to the great natural and business success of Eastern India. Kolkata was the first head office of the East Indian Organization, and some of its best-known typical monuments were designed by this English trading house. If Delhi is the stylish capital of the country and Bombay its significant business town, then Kolkata rates as the intellectual capital.









Labeled the "Cultural Capital of India", "The City of Processions", "The City of Palaces", and the "City of Joy", Kolkata has also been home to luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa and Satyajit Ray.
Kolkata has dry and wet climate with maximum temperature in summer rising to 38oC or above and the winter temperature falling to 10oC. The best time to visit Kolkata is from September to March. Kolkata is located at 22o34' N latitude and 88o24' E longitude.
